The city Brezno is located in the center of Slovakia, in Banska Bystrica county in the upper part of the region Horehronie. The area of district Brezno, in which city Brezno is the center, stretches to 1265 km². In the east it starts by the town Telgart under the saddle Besnik and ends by the western boarders of the district behind the villages Nemecka and Raztoka.

The largest part of the district is Horehronské Podolie, bordered in the north by massive wall of Low Tatras, and in the south by vast ridges of Slovenské Rudohorie (Slovak Ore Mountains). Cadastral area of the city Brezno itself is12 946 hectares and is located in the altitude from 486 to 2043 metres above the sea level. The center of town is at an altitude of 489 meters above the sea level. Horehronské Podolie is the trough basin belonging to high-lying valleys of Slovakia, ranging from 390 to 1000 meters above the sea level, the bottom of Horehronské Podolie reaches the highest altitude of all the basins in Slovakia in the saddle at Besnik Telgart, which is at 1000 meters above the sea level. The highest point of the area is Ďumbier with the altitude of 2043 meters above the sea level. The lowest point is on the surface of the Hron River, which flows through the whole valley from the spring under Kráľová hoľa mountain through the beautiful serpentine stretch in the direction east - west. An altitude difference in the elevation of the highest and lowest point causes the great differentiation of the surface and the resulting differences in climatic and bio-geographical characteristics.

The oldest so far known written record about Brezno is in the document from the king Bela IV. from the year 1265.
In 1380 Hungarian king Louis I. (The Great) Anjou granted the city privileges to Brezno. The name Brezno was first used by Louis I. in the document from the 1560, which dealt with the conflict between the city of Brezno and the surrounding castle dominions.
