The town of Dunajská Streda grew in the place of an ancient settlement lying in the heart of an island called Žitný ostrov. The oldest habitation dates back to the Bronze Age and traces of the times of Roman domination and nations´ migration have remained here for centuries.

The original settlement situated in the territory of the current district town of Dunajská Streda can be proved by several findings of the Stone Age, the Bronze Age as well as by some artifacts from the 1st century after Christ.

According to the town chronicle, the today´s town of Dunajská Streda originated in  1874 by merging the former independent parts of Újfal, Nemesszeg, Előtejed with the original part of Dunajská Streda (Szerdahely in Hugarian). As per the abovementioned chronicle, the first reference to Dunajská Streda dates back to 1250.

The town name (using the third day of the week as one part of it) was motivated by a privilege according to which fairs could be organized every Wednesday in the territory of the current town.

For the past thirty years Dunajská Streda has experienced a major development. Narrow and tortuous streets, unsound houses with sedge roofs and small window shutters are now just reliques of the past. Most of the houses has been replaced by residential blocks of new town districts. 85 % of the old houses have been so far demolished. A sewerage system and a water supply system were built in the town. Roads and pavements were reconstructed recently. And where there were ancient houses and narrow streets previously, there are parks with flourishing roses, ornamental bushes and trees nowadays.
