The metropolis of Horná Nitra - Prievidza – is a town of rich history which started by a community of hunters settled on a hill called Mariánsky vŕšok. The first written reference to Prievidza (Preuigan) dates back to 1113 and can be seen in the Hungarian King Koloman´s document confirming properties of a benedictine abbey at Zobor. Favourable geographical location only supported the establishment and development of the town. Prievidza was situated at the junction of two significant trade routes. This fact already proves that Prievidza was an ancient Slavonic colony.
The town character was radically changed in the second half of the 20th century when it, mainly due to rapid industrial development, grew up from an originally small town of 5.000 inhabitants all the way to the current size.
The town is an administrative centre of the region where state authorities and headquarters of big companies have their offices. It is also a centre of bank and financial institutions as well as of numerous educational institutions, universities included. There are also several cultural, educational and social establishments. Even within the county of Trenčín where the region of Horná Nitra geographically belongs, Prievidza takes a prominent position as a town with high concentration of important institutions. Prievidza has many green fields and parks which makes it one of the greenest towns in Slovakia. Prievidza is also a town with the largest commercial area per population and with a developed commercial network which bears evidence of its notable share of economic course of events not only within the region but also all around Slovakia. It is a town with the highest number of sports facilities which surely guarantees the interest of future generations.
Even thanks to new housing agglomerations with high concentration of youth, Prievidza is considered to be a town of young people. And the future and perspective of the Horná Nitra´s metropolis of Prievidza lies just in focus on young people.
