Topoľčany is the city located in the Nitra region in Slovakia.
Recent researches showed that the name is derived from the Old-Slavic language „topol“ meaning „bitter“ or „warm“ because of the thermal springs in the surroundings of the city in the beginning of middle ages. [source missing]
The river Nitra creates wide valley between two mountain ranges which are visible from the city – Tribeč (in the east) and Považský Inovec (in the west).
In the city there are several different kinds of industry: lumber, electro-technical, clothing and food industry. There is a winter stadium, swimming pool and an outdoor swimming facility with three pools. Historically the most successful sports in the city are handball, table tennis and water polo. From the sport events there is Topoľčany half-marathon regularly every year. There is a Roman Catholic Church of Virgin Mary Taken-to-heaven from the year 1792, then the Chapel of Virgin Mary of Carmel from 1750 and the Chapel of Holy Cross (Calvary) from 1856.
